Books on Food, Culture & the Human Journey

A growing library of books by Marcia George — series and collections that travel through food and fermentation, the Vitamin Series, migration, fiction and more.

One caravan, many journeys

Many Series.
One Curious Journey.

The Food Caravan is the home of Marcia George's books. It began with food — and, like any caravan, it keeps travelling: into science and tradition, into the Vitamin Series, into stories of migration, into fiction and beyond.

Each series has its own character and its own colours, but they share a way of looking at the world: following the connections between people, place, history and everyday life.

“Every topic naturally led to another: ingredients led to geography, geography led to culture, culture led to history.”

Marcia George, Preface to Volume I

The further I looked, the more connections I found.

Meet Marcia George

Marcia George is an independent researcher, educator and writer whose work explores the science, history, culture and living traditions of fermentation.

Her research encompasses microbial ecology, traditional food preservation, culinary heritage, fermentation science, global food cultures, and the relationships between food, health and human civilisation. Drawing together knowledge from different cultures and disciplines, she seeks to present fermentation simultaneously as a biological process and a shared human story.

The Food Caravan grew from years of research, curiosity and observation, and from a long interest in the connections between ingredients, geography, culture, history and science.
